“Exotic” hit the music scene in 2013 topping the charts at #1 on iTunes India. M.I.A.’s music shows how she continues to draw inspirations from her Indian roots. The song uses the urmee drum, commonly used in Tamil folk music. M.I.A’s single off her 2007 album Kala, “Boyz”is an ecelectic combination of Tamil, electronic and soca music. The record scored the Pussycat Dolls a MTV VMA Nomination for Best Choreography but shortly after the group announced their split. The Dolls version features Rahman’s signature musical arrangements and syncopated beats. Rahman to record their own version of the movie’s main song. Riding off the blockbuster success of Slumdog Millionaire, The Pussycat Dolls teamed up with A.R. Gomez made headlines for her 2013 MTV Movie Awards performance of the song when she sported a bindi as a fashion accessory. The song opens with a light dholak beat steady through to the end. Produced by hit-duo Stargate, Selena Gomez released the pop-fusion track on her solo debut. The records features a Punjabi melody played on a tumbi and was ranked number 16 on VH1’s Greatest Songs of Hip-Hop. The always-inventive Missy Elliot experimented with bhangra for thetrack “Get Your Freak On”.
